SPRING NEWS

May 6th, 2008

Dear Yogis and Yoginis

We hope you are all enjoying the Spring! We are particularly enjoying the longer evenings and that little bit of extra spring in everyone’s step that the extra light seems to be endowing us all with. Spring is often a time of new beginnings as we emerge from the dark winter months, sometimes it can almost feel like we are emerging from a kind of hibernation. So, at Unity Yoga we too are embracing some new beginnings!! This page will be regularly updated this year not only with news about the Unity Yoga class schedules but also with articles written by our teachers regarding their style of teaching, further training or travels that they have undertaken and so on. You can also look forward to articles about Yoga Therapy, Pregnancy Yoga, Scaravelli Yoga as well as articles on topics like Gravity and Levity, The Breath and so on. If you have any suggestions regarding what you would like to see more of on our website, please feel free to email us!

In the meantime, there are a few changes to our class schedule coming up:

New FUNDAMENTALS 1 classes will begin on Wednesday May 21st from 6.15-7.45pm and on Monday June 9th from 8-9.30pm.

A new GENTLE YOGA & MOVEMENT class will begin on Thursday May 15th. It will run for 8 weeks from 6.15 - 7.45pm. This class will include gentle movement sequences, restorative yoga postures, breathing techniques for energy and relaxation as well as meditation and guided relaxation. It is suitable for anyone who feels like they need to recharge their batteries and is suitable for those looking for a more therapeutic yoga class such as those with ME or MS. This class also has a more meditative emphasis and would appeal to those of you who would like to make more time for reflection and self-awareness. This class is open to all ages and abilities!!

Francesca Giusti will begin a brand new 6 week class in HANNA SOMATIC MOVEMENT EDUCATION on Thursday May 22nd from 6.15-7.45pm.  Hanna Somatics is a method of neuro-muscular re-education that can teach you to recognize, release, and reverse chronic pain patterns resulting from injury, stress, repetitive motion strain, or habituated postures.  It is of particular benefit in the relief from painful joints, headaches, poor posture, fatigue and the release of chronic tensions which can build up as the result of accident trauma such as whiplash.  In each class you will learn simple movement sequences; week by week building a larger vocabulary of movement and steadily increasing your confidence and ease.

Unity Yoga: Yoga in Cork from September 2007

August 29th, 2007

Namaste everyone!

Well, it’s September again; a busy time of year for us at Unity Yoga as we put together a new term of exciting yoga classes for you! The changing of the seasons always heralds a time of re-evaluation, a sense of ending and beginning, transformation and change. It’s a great time of year to take up a new activity such as yoga or indeed return to your yoga mat and create a clear intention about what you want out of your practice.

It is often at this time of year when many of us are busiest that we most long for a sense of calm. A yoga class can provide you with the space and tools that make it easier to access inner quiet and perspective when life around you becomes busy, stressful or crazy!

Some of you have been to yoga classes before, some of you may just be curious about what it’s all about. For those of you who have practiced yoga before, either with us or with other teachers; whether you have been practicing regularly or have lapsed a bit in your practice, we welcome you back! To those of you who have never set foot on a yoga mat and aren’t quite sure what it’s all about, we invite you to come and give it a try! We are really proud of Unity Yoga and how much it means to our students to have a place to go to that is conducive to peace and tranquility and gives them a chance to gain some perspective on our often busy and stressful modern lives!

Classes on offer from this September include Yoga Fundamentals 1 & 2, Improvers, Yoga for Pregnancy, Kundalini Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Sivananda Yoga, Gentle Yoga, a Breathing Class and Yoga for Chronic Fatigue and ME.

This September, we are delighted to present you with a number of opportunities to try out some FREE YOGA CLASSES. Once again, we are also hosting two OPEN DAYS; this is a chance for you to come and meet some of the teachers, have a chat about yoga or sign up for classes. Read on for details of the dates and times.

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS AND CLASSES AT UNITY YOGA

April 23rd, 2007

Hi Everyone!!

We have had a wonderful spring, enjoying pre and post natal workshops with Daniela Iacopino as well as two enriching Iyengar workshops with Laurence O’Toole. Laurence will return on May 19th to teach one last workshop in Ireland before the summer. Iyengar teachers, especially with as many years experience teaching as Laurence, are few and far between here in Munster so this is a great opportunity for yoga enthusiasts to experience this approach to yoga!! June Durkin will teach a workshop on yoga in the tradition of Vanda Scaravelli on Sunday, April 29th and Margaret Hardman will also join us on June 16th to teach another workshop on yoga in the tradition of Vanda Scaravelli. The emphasis of these workshops is on cultivating intuitive listening, allowing muscles to respond less mechanically through effort and tension, and more through the powerful wave of extension produced by gravity and the breath of life itself. On May 26th, I will teach a workshop on Developing a Home Practise. This workshop will be suitable for students of any level who are interested in taking their yoga asana practise home with them!! In July, Eric Stewart will visit us again from America to teach a workshop from Friday the 13th to Monday the 16th. The theme for this workshop is ‘Deepening Resilience’. The aim of the workshop is to deepen flexibility by building integral strength and to develop strength by accessing the power of water and fluidity. There will be a particular emphasis on building and deepening the practise of Inversions.

New Yoga Fundamentals and Fundamentals 2 classes will start from May 16th and we are taking bookings now. Our teaching schedule will be modified slightly during the summer months so check the timetable posted on our website for updates.

Om Shanti

Medica mondiale, a German based organization, acts to support traumatised women and girls in war and crisis zones and views its role as that of an advocate for the rights and interests of women who have survived sexualised wartime violence.

Unity Yoga will run a class from 11-1 on the 21st of January; all the proceeds from this class will be donated to Medica Mondiale.

PREGNANCY YOGA

December 4th, 2006

Yoga is a safe, simple and a natural way of preparing the pregnant woman for motherhood and the baby for childbirth. The practice of yoga during pregnancy greatly enhances the vitality, mobility, general health and emotional well-being of the expectant mother; it also provides a valuable quiet space in which to form a bond with the unborn child and to prepare for birth.
On a physical level, yoga movements (asanas) improve circulation, strengthen postural muscles and help to alleviate or prevent some of the minor discomforts of pregnancy such as heartburn, backache, hip joint and ribcage aches.
Pranayama (breathing exercises) ensures a proper supply of oxygen, blood and energy to both foetus and mom, and reduces fatigue.

Emotionally, yoga and meditation reduce and control stress, anxiety and fear. Yoga also improves general mood and the ability to manage pain. Meditation can also create a deeper awareness and connection with the baby.
A yoga practice of asanas, pranayama and meditation creates mental focus, concentration, discipline and stillness, enabling a smooth pregnancy and a relatively easy childbirth.
Class description
The Unity Yoga program of weekly classes offers a comprehensive system for learning and using yoga throughout pregnancy, labour, and birth. Students learn simple but effective yoga postures to manage common physical ailments that can occur during pregnancy. Students also learn breathing, relaxation and visualisation techniques to build confidence and assist in easeful birth.
The classes offer a complete program of breath-work, relaxation, postures, movement, voice-work and meditations suited to all stages of pregnancy, from 12 - 42 weeks. We recommend beginning the classes in the third month of pregnancy and continuing throughout (once or twice a week, as time permits) in order to gain maximum benefit, but it is possible to begin at any point in your pregnancy. A minimum of eight classes enables you to acquire a basic ‘embodied memory’ of the key techniques. The practical usefulness of the yoga increases in proportion to the woman’s familiarity with the techniques taught, and familiarity comes through repetition and variation on a core range of practices. This is particularly important in relation to the breath-work and visualization that is the foundation of the yogic approach to gentle birth.

Unity Yoga also runs periodic Yoga for pregnancy workshops open to pregnant women and their partners and to yoga teacher who wish to learn how to make pregnant students safe in their classes.

Those who have difficulty in affording a class should discuss this with their teacher, as we have a scheme for limited numbers of non-paying students to support them in attending certain classes.

NOVEMBER YOGA NEWS!!

November 11th, 2006

Hello Everyone!!

Following what has been a very exciting start to our Unity Yoga venture we are now coming up to our second term of classes. We will begin a new term on Wednesday November 15th and currently have spaces remaining on our Restorative Yoga class (Wednesday, 8-9.30), our Ashtanga Vinyasa class and on our Pregnancy Yoga (Wednesday, 6.15-7.45 & Saturday 10.30 - 12) classes. In order to book a place please contact us!!

We have also had the pleasure of hosting two wonderful workshops with June Durkin and Laurence O’Toole! We look forward to seeing June again in 2007 as we continue our exploration of the Scaravelli approach to yoga. We also look forward to Laurence’s next visit to Ireland when he will teach another Iyengar Yoga workshop here in Cork at Unity Yoga on the 9th of December. This is a great opportunity to explore the intricacies and subtleties of postures and how finding proper alignment can lead to deeper repose in asana. Eric Stewart will visit us from the US this December to teach a weekend long workshop from December 8-10th. This workshop entitled Yoga & Resilience will explore:
*How attention to resilience can help build deep, integral flexibility while maintaining essential stability.
*The ways in which water is essential to biological resilience, and how the body’s fluid systems are likewise essential.
*How a perspective of resilience offers insight regarding the inherent synergies of support between multiple body systems - organic, musculoskeletal, fluid, energetic - in asana and movement.
*How effort can be conducive or detrimental to resilience, and how to consciously conserve energy and direct it to best use.

We look forward to seeing you soon!!!
